Where and When It Swings
Swing isn't one thing that either happens or doesn't. It changes hour by hour as the ball ages, and country by country as the ground and the ball change under it. Put the clock and the map together and you can predict, roughly, when a Test will swing.

Two questions decide whether a bowler gets swing on any given afternoon, and they're the two this chapter answers. When in the innings is it — how old is the ball? And where in the world are you — which ball, which ground, which climate? Neither question has a single answer, because a cricket ball is not one object across eighty overs, and a cricket ground is not the same from Manchester to Mumbai.
The when: one ball, four lives
Follow a single ball through an innings and you watch it pass through distinct phases, each suited to a different kind of movement.
Overs one to twenty — the new ball. Hard, shiny, lacquered, the seam standing proud. This is the conventional-swing window: the smooth sealed surface keeps one side laminar, the upright seam is at its sharpest for movement off the pitch too. It's why the new ball is handed to the swing bowlers and why the first hour is so often the bowling side's best.
The middle overs. The lacquer wears through, and the two sides begin to diverge — one still polished, the other roughening. Conventional swing quietens as the shine fades. But this is exactly the phase where the contrast between the sides is being built, the asymmetry that will matter later. Not much happens in the air; a lot is being set up.
The old ball — roughly forty overs and beyond. Now the ball is genuinely scuffed and soft, and, as Part 6 explained, that roughness lowers the speed at which the flow trips turbulent. The reverse-swing window opens: the quicks can start bending the old ball the wrong way. On a ball that has kept a proud seam, this is a dangerous time to bat.
Eighty overs. By law the bowling captain can now demand a brand-new ball — and the whole cycle restarts, conventional swing and all. Deciding when to take it, versus staying with a reversing old one, is one of the genuine tactical calls in Test cricket.
The where: the same ball, a different game
Now the map. What swing you get in a given country comes down to a simple product: which ball they use, how fast the surface roughens it, and how long the shine survives. Change any of those and you change the swing.
England is the home of conventional swing. The Dukes ball keeps a proud seam; the grassy, softer outfields are gentle on the shine; the maritime climate keeps things cool and often overcast. So the ball can swing conventionally deep into an innings — past the thirtieth over — and reverse comes only later, because the shine lasts so long.
The subcontinent — India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh — is the home of reverse. Hard, dry, abrasive outfields rough a ball up fast, so the shine is gone early and the reverse and contrast regimes open early. India's SG ball can begin reversing inside ten to fifteen overs; Pakistan's dry, abrasive grounds, as Part 7 told it, were the cradle of the whole craft.
Australia trades prolonged swing for pace and bounce. The Kookaburra gives a sharp early window and then flattens, and the hard, true, bouncy pitches reward hostile length over movement — which is why Australian attacks are built around speed and bounce rather than extended swing.
South Africa offers a bit of everything: grassy Highveld pitches that seam, dry venues that reverse — with a twist of altitude. High up in Johannesburg, around seventeen hundred metres, the thinner air gives more carry and bounce but less swing.
New Zealand, green and maritime and often overcast, is friendly to both seam and swing with its Kookaburra.
As a rough guide, red balls start to reverse after very different amounts of use: an SG in around ten to fifteen overs, a Dukes around thirty, a Kookaburra later still, forty to fifty — and even a Dukes softens faster than usual in subcontinental heat. These averages are the ones displayed at the ECB's national performance centre; on an abrasive enough surface reverse can come as early as the sixth or seventh over.
Home advantage, decoded
Put the clock and the map together and the phrase “home advantage” stops being vague. It's substantially this: the home side grew up reading this ball's swing window and this ground's abrasiveness, and the tourists didn't. An attack drilled on a Kookaburra's brief early swing can't exploit a Dukes' long one; batters raised on flat subcontinental tracks can be undone by a seaming, reversing SG. The weather, as Part 5 argued, is mostly a story — but the ball and the ground are real, measurable edges, and they belong to whoever's at home.
That's the whole stage, then: the ball built to be lopsided, the science that bends it, the clock that ages it, the map that places it. All that's left is the people who mastered it — and each of the greats solved the same invisible problem in a different way.
