What Spin Actually Is
A spinner beats you twice with one ball — once in the air, once off the pitch — and does it not by bowling faster, but by bowling slower. Before anything else in the series, that is the trick to understand.

A fast bowler comes at you with everything the eye can measure: a long run-up, a leap, a ball hurled down at close to ninety miles an hour. The threat is obvious, and it is speed. A spin bowler walks in off a few paces and lobs the ball up slowly — slow enough that, in theory, you could walk down the pitch and hit it before it lands. And yet the best batters in the world get out to it, over and over, undone by a delivery that looked harmless in the air.
This is the puzzle at the heart of spin, and it is the exact opposite of the puzzle of pace. A fast bowler threatens you by giving you less time. A spinner threatens you by giving you more — more time for the ball to do things you cannot read, both in the air and off the ground.
The player doing this is a spin bowler: a slow bowler whose entire craft is to make the ball rotate rapidly as it leaves the hand. Those revolutions — the number of times the ball spins on its way down — are the engine of everything that follows. A quick spends his effort on speed; a spinner spends his on spin. And with it he deceives the batter not once, but twice.
A ball that deceives twice
Watch a spinning ball closely and it changes direction two separate times. First in the air, before it lands: it curves gently sideways — that sideways curve is called drift — and it drops out of the sky earlier and more steeply than an ordinary ball would, which is called dip. Then, at the bounce, it grips the surface and kicks off at an angle: that is turn, the deviation that gives spin its name.
Two deviations, with two different machines behind them — one made of air, one made of the ground. Most people only ever notice the second. We will take them one at a time, starting with the turn, because it is the one everybody has heard of.
The turn: a ball made to grip
A cricket ball has a seam — the raised, stitched ridge running round its middle. When a spinner rips his fingers or his wrist across the ball, he sets it spinning fast about that seam. The ball arrives still spinning, lands, and for a fraction of a second the seam and the rough leather bite into the surface. That grip converts the spin into a sideways shove: instead of carrying straight on, the ball changes direction. It turns.
How much it turns depends almost entirely on what there is to grip. A hard, grassy pitch is smooth and gives the seam little to catch on, so the ball skids on with barely a deviation. A dry, dusty, crumbling surface is all grip — loose grit and rough patches for the seam to dig into — and the very same ball can turn a foot or more. This is why the spinner is the slow bowler's weapon on worn or subcontinental pitches, and why a captain packs his side with spinners where he knows the surface will break up.
But notice what has to happen before any of that. The turn is all at the bounce — and by the time it bounces, the ball has already travelled most of its journey. It has not travelled it in a straight line.
Drift and dip: trouble before the bounce
The same revolutions that make the ball grip the pitch also work on it in the air. A spinning ball drags a thin skin of air round with it, and that dragged air pushes the ball to one side — a slow, curving drift. Tilt the axis of the spin forward and the push becomes downward instead: the ball dips, falling shorter and faster than the batter's eye expects.
This is why a slow, looping ball is a trap rather than a gift. The batter reads the line and length in the first instant and commits his feet — but the drift has nudged the ball a few inches across by the time it lands, and the dip has made it land shorter than he judged. He ends up playing where the ball was going, not where it actually went. The invitation to hit was the bait.
Both deceptions — the drift through the air and the turn off the pitch — come from the one thing the bowler put on the ball as he let it go. Which makes it worth asking: how much spin are we actually talking about?
Revolutions: the engine, and why slow wins
It is measured in revolutions per minute — the rev rate — and the figures are higher than they look from the boundary. A well-spun ball from a front-line spinner turns over more than 2,000 times a minute. England's Graeme Swann, one of the finest finger-spinners of his era, regularly cleared that mark; the county leg-spinner Liam Dawson has been measured above 2,100. The more revolutions on the ball, the more it both drifts and turns.
And now the paradox resolves. By taking the pace off, a spinner buys the two things his deviations need. A slower ball hangs in the air longer, giving the drift and the dip more time to bite. And it drops more steeply onto the pitch, landing at a sharper angle that lets the seam dig in and grip harder. Speed would rob him of both. For a spinner, slow is not a weakness he has to work around — it is the method itself.
