Turn off the Pitch
The ball changes direction in the length of a single bounce — and how far it turns is decided less by the bowler than by the strip, and the seam biting into it.

Send the same spinner, with the same action and the same ball, to two different grounds. On the first — a hard, green surface — his stock ball slides through straight and the batters play him off the pitch with ease. On the second — dry and dusty — the identical delivery grips and spits past the outside edge all day. He has not changed a thing. The pitch has changed everything.
The turn off the pitch is the deviation that gives spin its name, and it is the one the bowler is least in control of. To see why, you have to watch the fraction of a second the ball spends on the ground.
What happens in a hundredth of a second
The ball arrives spinning fast about its seam — the stitched ridge running round its middle. It lands, and for a moment measured in thousandths of a second the spinning surface is pressed against the pitch. If the surface grips, the spin suddenly has something to work against: instead of sliding straight on, the ball is levered sideways and leaves the pitch at a new angle. That sideways kick is the turn. It is not a slow curve like the drift — it is a sudden change of direction, over and done in the length of the bounce.
The pitch is half the bowler
Everything depends on whether the surface grips, and that is the pitch's business, not the bowler's. A hard, well-grassed pitch is smooth: the seam finds little to catch on, so the ball skids on with barely a deviation. It is why a spinner is often harmless on the first morning of a match, when the surface is fresh and firm.
A dry, dusty, worn pitch is the opposite. Its surface has broken up into loose grit and rough, crumbling patches, and the seam bites into them the way a stud bites soft ground. The same ball that skidded through on day one now grips and turns a foot. This is why spin is the weapon of worn and dry surfaces — the subcontinent, and the fourth and fifth days of a Test — and why a captain packs his side with spinners where he knows the pitch will crumble.
Revolutions, and the angle of the spin
Within that ceiling, the bowler has two levers. The first is simply how hard he spins it. More revolutions mean more turn — the reason a big spinner of the ball rips it further, on the same pitch, than a gentle one, and the reason those rev-rate figures from Part 1 (over two thousand a minute for a front-line spinner) actually matter. The faster the ball is spinning when it lands, the more there is for the surface to grip.
The second lever is the axis he spins it around, and it forces a choice. Spin the ball round an upright, sideways axis — side spin — and nearly all of that rotation goes into turning it sideways off the pitch: maximum turn. Tilt the axis forward, toward the topspin we met in the last part — over spin — and you trade some of that sideways turn for extra dip and steeper bounce. A spinner is always choosing, ball to ball, between the one that turns most and the one that bounces most.
So turn is a negotiation: the bowler's revolutions and choice of axis, set against the pitch's grip — and on a flat first-morning surface the pitch has the louder voice. But there is one thing the bowler decides entirely on his own, before the pitch gets a say: which way to turn the ball, and at whom. That gives us the two deliveries every spinner is built around.
